Kigurumi, shortened to kig or kigu, is a form of cosplay and self-expression that utilises anime-styled mascot masks.
People that engage in kigurumi and own kigurumi masks are often referred to as kigurumis, kigs, kigus, or kigurumi/kig actors.
While small variations on what these terms mean exist across the community, we have attempted to summarise the cultural meaning as best we can.
Animegao is another term that refers to the anime-styled masks and was used to differentiate away from the “onesie” animal costumes, which are also called kigurumi in Japan.
The verb “kigging” refers to the act of performing or existing while wearing a kigurumi mask.
Kigurumi, kig, and mask are used interchangeably throughout the wiki and the instructions.
