The Kig Atelier encourages the creation of custom accessories for our mask design, and as such, this page provides technical information on how the accessory mounting system is designed to work for our masks.
We use SI Metric units throughout.
On our masks, there are ten (10) mounting holes for accessories, specifically the following.
The mounting holes for accessories share the same basic dimensions across the entire mask. The holes are a minimum of 10mm in diameter, and are typically 9.4mm from the flat inside surface and where the surface of the mask would normally locate. The diagram above illustrates these key dimensions.
These dimensions were specifically chosen to fit a M5 DIN466 thumb nut (or the smaller and more generic “M5 Thumb Nuts for 3D Printer” according to Amazon) without risk of bottoming out the thumb nut against the accessory surface, thus providing solid clamping force against the shell.
In order to be compatible with the design above, an M5 thread with a pitch of 0.8mm (standard pitch) and a length of 12.5mm is needed.
Ideally the curvature of the accessory mating surface should match the shell. We have provided a 3D SPACECLAIM model that may be used to match the curvature or be used as a boolean tool.
The above demonstrates our recommended fixing arrangements for accessories. The arrangement consists of the M5 thumb nut discussed above, and a M5 threaded insert set into the accessory with a M5x25mm grub screw permanently installed into the part via the threaded insert and a form of thread locker (such as loctite or Super Glue).
The grub screw allows fine adjustment of the length of the external M5 thread on the accessory before the thread locker sets. It is recommended that the grub screw is set so that it is flush (or just below) with the top surface of the thumb nut as to reduce the chance of injury or damage to the actor's hadatai.
When designing accessories, a cavity below the threaded insert should be included to avoid damage to the part while installing the grub screw.
A jig that allows for the grub screw to be set flush may be found HERE.
Additional mounting holes are available from OUR STORE that may be adhered to the inside of the shell to add mounting holes in non-standard positions, while keeping compatibility with the accessory ecosystem.
The installation guide for custom mounting holes may be found in CUSTOM MOUNTING LOCATIONS.
The following are a list of accessories that have been made by The Kig Atelier and have compatibility with our accessory system. Requests can be made for accessories on OUR DISCORD.
